Things I Love About You... By Heather Wilson

Valentine's Love Cage of Affirmation!

Instead of using a card, I put together this little project as a way to show my boyfriend I love him this Valentine's Day.  Here's the materials you need:

Cut n' Boss and heart die cuts
decorative paper
Ebrush and markers
Small decorative bird cage
Hot glue
Embellishments (beads, lock, key, fringe, lace, etc.)
Jump rings
A colored pen to write with

Start with a sample piece of your decorative paper to practice on. You'll want to test this out with your Ebrush and see how different colors look on your paper. If you like the results, you can move on to a larger sheet and put all the colors you like on it.

I didn't leave any areas a solid color because I wanted the print on the paper to show. I did just enough to give it a bit of color.

Now you can start cutting out hearts with the Cut n' Boss! Remember to put the die cut flat side down on platform D. Lay your paper on top of that, then layer A, B, then A on top. I started out with about 15 hearts and later it ended up being 20 because I did some coloring with the Ebrush on plain white paper.

Take the color pen of your choice (I used pink!) and begin writing the things you love about your significant other! (You can also do this for family members or friends, but of course what you write would be much different!) I also wrote a couple favorite memories, and included some in-jokes in some of them.

Setting your hearts aside, you can start spicing up your bird cage a bit. I attached a heart shaped lock with a couple jump rings to the clasp of the cage lid.

Next I put a key above the lock by wrapping some wire from the cage around it with my pliers to hold it in place.

The bottom of the cage looked too plain to me, so I found some beaded fringe in one of my crafting stashes (you can never have too many craft stashes!) I attached it by putting a line of hot glue on the bottom of the bars. Tip: glue from top to bottom so the stringy parts can be pulled off easily from the bottom edges).

End your strip by overlapping the end where you started, and hot glue in place.

I hot glued some beads to the ends of the swirly wires on top. It needed some color there to balance out the trim on the bottom.

Now make your tag, either by buying some plain ones or cutting your own with the Cut n' Boss. Then add some color to it with the eBrush. I used a light pink sharpie first, then went around the edges with a slightly darker sharpie.

After writing "Things I love about YOU", attach the tag with two jump rings to the top of the cage.
Now you can add your notes to the cage in a neat pile. I put the sweetest ones on the bottom so the best ones would be saved for last.

Here it is finished! Either set on a table, or hang it up somewhere. If you have a bigger cage, use it as a centerpiece on the table for your loved one to find on Valentine's Day!
Have a great Valentine's everybody!

DIY Shrink Plastic Accessories: Use for Super Bowl LI or Valentine's!

'Ello everyone!

This month is all about the Super Bowl & Valentine's Day!  I wanted to make some fun, cute & easy accessories using themes inspired by both concepts.  One with pennants can be used as name tags or food decor and another inspired by the yummy candies that come with Valentine's (chocolates, sweethearts, more chocolates...).

Even though these accessories are geared toward February events, you can apply this to anything!  Halloween, Christmas, birthdays or celebrations in general!  The best part is that these are really about making a statement piece perfect for any #OOTD post without having to buy the designer brand accessories at designer brand prices.

YOU WILL NEED:
+ Fine point Sharpies, any color
+ paint markers (optional)
+ Sharpie Marker Adapter
+ Cut'n'Boss
+ pennant shaped cutting die, at least 4" in length (Super Bowl LI)
+ heart shaped cutting die, at least 4" in width (Valentine's Day)
+ white or frosted shrink plastic film
+ 200~400 grit sandpaper
+ embossing heat gun or pre-heated oven
+ clear varnish or clear acrylic sealer
+ hole punch, for keychains & charms
+ jump rings, for keychains & charms
+ pin backs, for brooches
+ super glue or E6000, for brooches

PROCESS:

1.  Prep your stuff!

I know, it's a weird step, but this way you can move through all
the proceeding steps with ease!

Sand your shrink film on only ONE side with your sandpaper and have a setup for your eBrush.

Make sure the area you are working in has paper put down & there is good ventilation; airbrushing & sanding projects need ventilation!

2.  Use your Cut'n'Boss to cut the out the heart shapes from the shrink plastic film to make as many
accessories as you would like!  The platform combination to use is the same as the one in the manual (top to bottom):

Platform A
Platform B
Platform A
Shrink Film
Heart Cutting Die/Pennant Cutting Die
Platform D

The cutting die has to be at least 4" wide in order for the accessories to turn out just under 2".  Any smaller, the details may be too difficult to read from a distance.

3A.  Color & decorate your hearts on the SMOOTH side of the die cuts!

I chose to use the pastel colors from Sharpie's many assorted colors.  The trick is to make the colors 50% lighter than what comes out.  If you have used shrink film before, then you'll recall that the plastic shrinks along with the color intensifying..!

To prevent a pastel pink from turning red or a green from turning dark green, I used one color Sharpie at a time to spray from a distance of about 6" or more from the surface & get an even mist on however many hearts/pennants I want.  Let the pieces dry.

3B.  Now if you're doing conversation hearts for Valentine's, you can use the red Sharpie to write your personal saying or a classic conversation heart saying.  My favorite is "FAX ME".  For the Super Bowl LI charms, you can personalize drink tags with people's name in the style of old university sports' teams.

For the conversation hearts, I also took a Sharpie color a shade darker than the heart to make an outline.  Let dry again.

4.  Now you can choose whether or not to make these hearts a charm or a pin.

To make a keychain or charm, grab your hole punch & strategically punch a hole into the heart.  To make a pin, just skip to the next step.  (:

5.  The fun part: it's time to shrink the hearts!  Use your oven or a heat gun as per instruction.

If you're using a heat gun like me, then even distribution of heat is key!  I quickly press down on the finished piece to make sure it will cool flat.

6.  Use your bottle of varnish to make a nice protective coat over your work.  You can do both sides, but just the front is fine.  Let dry for a few hours or overnight.

7.  Attach your pieces to jump rings or use super glue to attach the pin back to the piece.

TADA!  Your very own unique & handmade accessories, perfect to impress your party, significant other or just to impress yourself!  (:  Here is an example of using paint markers & clear shrink film:

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial!  Have a fun February~

Welcome Guest Designer, Sonja Bakonyi!

Every year, I make a special Mickey or Minnie card for a relatives birthday. She collects Mickey everything. When I say collect, I mean they have houses full of Mickey collectibles! One of my childhood memories is touring the houses and being in awe.

This year is a little bit more special to get her out a card as some recent health concerns have come alight.

Which brought me to the inspiration to do a sunburst as the card base. I wanted it to be multi colored though, but smooth and no seems. Out my Craftwell eBrush came.

After selecting my paper pallet, I was able to select my eBrush pallet as well.

To create the sunburst, I cut the pattern I wanted out on contact paper to make a template. I used contact paper for two reasons.

  1. It provides a more secure coverage and cleaner lines than just using a paper template or often even a plastic template
  2. It peels off of the paper smoothly and leaves no tack or torn paper

This is what it looks like before peeling off the  contact paper

The fun part is getting to airbrush any pattern onto my project. Since this is a starburst, I decided to go with the dark color in the middle and work my way out.

The final product is just what I wanted so I didn't have to redo it!

Now on to my favorite reason to have an eBrush. Detailing. You can take an ordinary cut of paper and amp it up with highlights, low-lights, or just a dab of extra va-va-voom.

Take Mickey's pants for instance. Above is the before eBrush and below is the after eBrush. It looks like a mess at first, but take away the extra paper and it leaves a nice highlight around the edges.

Shoes, pants, face, eyes, really any object can be enhanced with this magical little machine!

I also use my eBrush to dust off the final product to get rid of any extra little fuzzies, glitter, or particles that I don't want on my project. Just leave the marker out and blow away.

Once the pieces are all airbrushed and ready for assembly, the final product pops on the page.

This card is an easel card just for a little extra fun.

The balloons float off the page on purpose. The eBrush actually makes this project pop and look as if it was a printed object. Other than the sentiments, everything is hand pieced though!

A few pop up tabs under the inside sentiment helps keep the easel portion in place.

DIY Butterfly Tea Bags (Inspired by Designer Yena Lee)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  It's January 2017 so this means that winter is in full swing!
What better way to enjoy your hot toddy or warm tea than with a little flourish & personal touch?

While this is a commercial design, I thought anyone at home can give it a shot!

YOU WILL NEED:
+Cut'n'Boss machine + platforms
+Sharpie Fine Tip markers, choose colors that complement the cardstock
+white paint or whiteout (optional)
+heavyweight cardstock, at least 90 lbs
+butterfly die from Teresa Collins TODAY Die Set
+scissors
+tea bag of choice

PROCESS:

1.  I will be using the realistic butterfly tutorial for this project!  This time I chose a red cardstock
and complemented the color with magenta & purple fine tip Sharpies.

2.  After all the coloring is done, I added some white dots for a bit of brightness.

3.  Fold the butterfly in half & use the scissors to cut a heart shape from the middle.  The point of the heart will cling onto the edge of the mug or cup.

4.  Cut off or untie the tea bag from its paper tag.  Tie the twine through the center of the heart so
the butterfly acts as the tea tag.

5.  TADA!  Now you have a cute, personal butterfly at the edge of your tea cup!
Make a huge set of butterfly tea bags for a party or a gathering to impress your family & friends.

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial!  Make 2017 a fun year for yourself & others!
